Why grow hop in Iowa?
Common hop is an emerging crop in the Midwest. People are intrigued by the fast growth rate, flavor enhancement in beer, and the economic potential (>$100 million in Iowa in 2014). The biologic and economic facts are remarkable, and it is important to understand hops is not an easy crop to produce from horticulture nor financial standpoints. As Iowans continue to plant hops, they continue to plant into an unknown industry. Hop production has its obstacles, it is feasible in Iowa with some training. This hop workshop series will focus on establishing a new production system. The full workshop package includes an educational trip to hop yards near Traverse City, Michigan, the fourth largest hop producing state in the United States.
