Alfred M. Blackmer, Professor, Agronomy, Iowa State University. Guidelines
for nitrogen management have long been based on expected yield levels and calculated
fertilizer-N credits. Mounting evidence suggests that these guidelines are
scientifically indefensible and may be the primary barrier to improving nitrogen
management in Iowa. A foundation for having guidelines based on the concept
of nitrogen-sufficiency levels will be presented. The advantages and disadvantages
of such guidelines will be discussed.
