Gene Parkin is Donald Bentley Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Iowa, Director of the Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination, and serves on the Executive Committee of the Center for Biocatalysis and Bioprocessing. He served as Chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering from 1990-95. Previously, he was on the Engineering faculty at Drexel University. He received a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Stanford University. Professor Parkin's present research interests are bioremediation of contaminated waters; enhanced bioremediation using zero-valent iron; wetlands treatment of contaminated waters; role microbial-reactive mineral interactions in natural attenuation; anaerobic biological waste treatment; health effects of environmental contamination. He has received the J. James R. Croes Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Harrison Prescott Eddy Medal from the Water Environment Federation.
