Iowa State University

2008 Iowa Water Conference

February 26-27, 2008

Scheman Building, Iowa State Center, Ames, Iowa.

The changing Midwest landscape brought about by increasing commodity prices, the bioenergy industry, and new farm bill will impact local and regional water resources. Significant changes in agricultural systems, management practices, and water demands to satisfy the escalating demands on Iowa agriculture have the potential to positively and/or negatively affect surface and ground water.

The purpose of this conference is to address the question:

How will the changing agricultural landscape affect Iowa's water resources, and water resources outside the state's borders?

Conference objectives

  • Clarify the relationship between landscape changes and water quality.
  • Identify what additional information is needed to better understand these relationships and develop management practices to improve Iowa water quality.
  • Suggest means to address these needs.

The Iowa Water Center will summarize input gathered from the conference working groups and develop recommendations that address water resource opportunities and challenges related to the changing agricultural landscape. The recommendations will be provided to policy makers, agencies, researchers and other key stakeholders.
